Overview

Nd: YAG laser treatment, or Neodymium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet laser treatment, is a medical procedure commonly used in ophthalmology for various eye conditions. The laser is an instrument that produces a pure, high-intensity beam of light energy. The laser light can be precisely focused onto the retina (the light sensing tissue at the back of the eye), selectively treating the desired area while leaving the surrounding tissues untouched. The absorbed energy creates a microscopic spot to destroy lesions or weld tissues together. Laser procedure is usually painless while you remain awake and comfortable. Laser treatment can often preserve vision or prevent vision loss if given in a timely fashion.

Procedure

The procedure is typically performed in an outpatient setting. The Nd: YAG laser emits a focused beam of light that is used to create precise openings in eye tissues without making an incision. The laser energy is targeted to the specific area needing treatment.

Purpose

Nd: YAG laser is primarily used for posterior capsulotomy and peripheral iridotomy. Posterior capsulotomy is performed to address clouding of the posterior capsule, a common complication following cataract surgery. Peripheral iridotomy is a procedure used to create a small hole in the peripheral iris, typically to treat or prevent angle-closure glaucoma.

Posterior Capsulotomy

Following cataract surgery, the natural lens is replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Over time, the posterior capsule may become cloudy, causing blurred vision. Nd: YAG laser posterior capsulotomy clears this cloudiness by creating an opening in the capsule.

Peripheral iridotomy

Following cataract surgery, the natural lens is replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Over time, the posterior capsule may become cloudy, causing blurred vision. Nd: YAG laser posterior capsulotomy clears this cloudiness by creating an opening in the capsule.

Safety and Recovery

Nd: YAG laser treatments are generally considered safe and efficient. The procedures are usually quick, and patients may experience improved vision shortly afterward. Some patients may experience floaters or flashes of light, which are usually temporary.
